From Open Skies to Open Hearts – A Story Worth Sharing

At Osborn Airfield, flight is more than a function — it’s a way of life. It all started with Jon, a small-town guy from Brooklyn, Michigan, who came to Florida in 1980 chasing a motocross dream and never looked back. It was here that he met Darlene, a born-and-raised Floridian from the Fort Lauderdale area. Their story began at her parents’ KOA Campground, and after marrying in Haines City, they’ve been on one long, adventurous journey — together — for over 44 years and counting.

Over the decades, Jon and Darlene wore many hats. From bricklaying and real estate in Brandon, to long-haul trucking for nine years with D & K Transport out of Dade City, they’ve always shared one thing: the spirit to build something lasting. That spirit eventually led them back to college — Darlene, graduating with honors in Math Education from UCF, taught school for six years, while Jon graduated summa cum laude in Civil Engineering and is now happily retired.

After being told in the late 80’s they would likely never have children, they were more than surprised in 1998, after 17 years of marriage, to be blessed with a son. Neil is now in his middle 20’s, living at the field and helping run things.
